Hajj Pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia: Health and Vaccination Requirements

Each year, CDC publishes vaccination requirements, vaccination recommendations and other health advice for travelers to the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages whose trips originate from the U.S. CDC indicates that for entry, Saudi Arabia requires quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine in the past 3 years. Similarly, each year, WHO publishes its recommendations for the Hajj pilgrimage. WHO provides specific information about vaccinations against yellow fever, meningococcal disease, polio and influenza for entering pilgrims, depending upon country of origin.

CDC's recommendations, in addition to meningococcal vaccination, include: (a) routine vaccinations (e.g., MMR, tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis), (b) influenza vaccine and (c) up-to-date immunizations against typhoid fever, polio, hepatitis A and hepatitis B, and if necessary, varicella. Note that travelers whose trips originate from other countries may have to fulfill additional vaccine requirements as described in the annual WHO document.

For the 2021 Hajj, due to continuing COVID-19 concerns, the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announced on June 12, 2021, that only 60,000 residents and citizens of Saudi Arabia will be permitted to perform Hajj. In addition, CDC recommended avoiding travel to Saudi Arabia, and being fully-vaccinated against COVID-19 for international travel.
